Overview
After canceling C&S the last 2 years due to Covid-19, the near perfect conditions for golf in 2019 on the east coast are but a distant memory. The Executive Committee decision to go to Tucson was well received in 2020 prior to the cancellation. As Tucson still offers excellent weather and fantastic courses, it was decided to stay the course and follow Horace Greeley's advice to head west for 2022.
Regina Romero, who took over as mayor of Tucson in Dec., 2019, is buoyed by our tournaments selection of her hometown, and extended a heartfelt welcome to the participants, saying "The city of Tucson wants to thank the Corn & Soda tournament for coming here to play in the 36th annual competition, and hopes all involved will not only enjoy the great courses but also our excellent restaurants and night life."
Results
Soda, with the return to play of Dan "KMan" Kniola and led by GOTY Brian "Iced Tea" Jackson, handily defeats Corn 18.5 to 13.5. The contest looked as though it would be tightly contested after the opening best ball day where Soda came back from a 2 point deficit in the morning rounds to tie Corn 4 to 4. On the following day, Soda continued their winning ways, pasting Corn by 3 points in the morning round and followed it up with a 1 point victory in the afternoon round. This was extended by another point on the last day of the event in the Individual matches. Soda's victory might have been even bigger considering they also had Jerry "Tarzan" Jungels who was rewarded with the Big Duffer jacket.
In the 4-man scramble, the team of Ryan "Mully" Chaloupka, Scott "Snatch" Anderson, GOTY, and Greg "Otis" Dairl won the Stableford boosted by their 10 points from an Eagle on the 13th hole. However, the team of Brett "Bert" Anderson, Gary "Snuffy" Shaw, Mikael "Sven" Rudin, and Dave "Jack" Nicholson were the big money winners of the scramble as their gross score tied "Mully's" team on the front nine and they edged them out by a stoke on the back nine to win the back nine and overall Nassau.
Brian "Algae" Allgaier won the Partner with a Pro contest selecting Si Woo Kim and taking in the big bucks while the unprecedented 5-man tie between Karl "Schnak" Schnakenburg, KMan, GOTY, Bert, and Honer for 2nd place money was able to cover their entry costs plus $12.
Contestants enjoyed the El Conquistador hotel and its environs during the 4 days of matches, and would definitely consider returning here.
