Synopsis

The Cup returned to Oralndo, FL for the 1st time since 1993 at the Grenelefe resort. This year’s C&S Cup will be remembered for a number of firsts.  New comer’s Dave Nicholson and Dale Ogden bettered last year’s rookie contingent with a 9-1-2 record and once again ignored the overall miserable rookie Cup history to finish 1 & 2 respectively, in the GOTY standings.  In fact, Nicholson accomplished a clean sweep of the C&S Cup, Scramble Championship, and GOTY - so much for 1st year jitters.  The Cup also saw its first broken bone player as Brown arrived 5 days after breaking his collar bone and required his partners to hit all of his shots except for short chips and putts.  The victorious Corn team of Bootcheck, Brown, Jarman, Kniola, Nicholson, and Ogden looked to be a wire to wire winner jumping out to a 4.5 to 1.5 lead after the 1st day and extending it to 8 to 4 after the 2nd day.  However, Soda staged a rally on the Saturday morning matches, winning them 4.5 yo 1.5 and cutting the Corn lead to 1 point.  When Oliger crushed Brown in the afternoon suddenly the Cup was all square.  As the noose began to tighten around the throats of the Corn players, the decided underdog Jarman got a huge halve against Stracke.  That began Corn’s winning rally as they won 3 of the next 4 matches and tied the other one for a 13.5 to 10.5 victory.  In the Scramble Championship, the short hitting team of Brown, Matthews, Nicholson and Olson birdied 2 of the final 4 holes from long range for a 3 stroke victory.  The concept of al a carte golf once again was a very successful format with absolutely perfect weather.
