Synopsis
The C&S Invitational revisited the Las Vegas area after its initial trip there in 2000. This time the site was about 45 miles south of Vegas on the NV/CA state line; a wide space in the road that has somehow become home to 3 hotel/casinos and 2 4.5 star golf courses designed by Tom Fazio. Hospitality and service at the courses were 1st rate. Weather went from cold to pleasant and back to cold each day. Kniola was injured as early as the practice round at the Legacy in Vegas when his back could not hold up to 60 mph wind gusts. The trip was the 1st not attended by charter members Brown and Bootcheck. There were 4 freshmen (Tanner, Domingo, Tom Nicholson, and Dave Hone). The Soda team of Kniola, Stracke, Gieselmann, Ogden, Hone and Tanner shot out of the blocks and never looked back. It was the worst thumping since 1997 and the 2nd worst in C&S history. The Scramble Championship was played over 2 days for the 1st time and was extremely competitive. The team of Granger, Ogden, Dave Nicholson, and Gieselmann broke the tie on the 16th hole and went on to post a 2 shot victory. Gieselmann secured his 1st GOTY win by going without a loss and Domingo became the 1st C&S competitor to not make a single point. The trip was again made in parallel with the start of the NC2A basketball tournament. Ogden and Granger took the NC2A C&S wagering. All attendees won the collective big bet when the Sergeant at Arms, Olson, had the wrong game time for the initial bet, which would have been a loss, and substituted another that won.
