It was difficult to foresee that the C&S Tournament would take place given that the week saw 2 players drop out to injury the days before the tournament and we had a weather forecast of Biblical proportions of rain and wind.  But somehow, all rounds except the practice round were held, and they all took place in relative calm conditions often in bright sun. Gary 'Snuffy' Shaw went beyond the call of duty, allowing us to use his lake house for tournament central while hosting 5 of the players for the entire event.

Both teams were tied after the 2 man Scramble rounds and after falling a point behind after the morning 2 man best ball matches, Soda blanked the Corn team in the afternoon. This pulled Soda to a 3 point lead which was maintained in the singles matches which saw both teams winning 7 points.  The team of Tom 'Yanni' Kniola, Brian 'Iced T' Jackson, Tom 'Ollie' Oliger, and Gary 'Snuffy' Shaw dominated the 4-man Scramble besting their closest rival by 4 strokes and 14 Stableford points.  For the first time, we had a co-sharing of the 2 buck award by Tom 'JJ' Nicholson and Dan 'K-Man' Kniola for getting injured within 2 days of the start of the tournament.  At the awards ceremony, the GOTY went to Scott 'Snatch' Anderson but a later recount determined that Brian 'Ice Tea' Jackson was the winner. The Duffer was earned by rookie John 'JD' Dubay who took his 1st day whiff and the jacket all in stride with a sincere and most importantly, brief, speech.  Eric 'E' Olson had his hands full maintaining the weeks logistics with changes in team personnel and courses but with Snuffy's help, it all came together.  E was rewarded by winning the Partnering with a Pro by picking Webb 'show me the money' Simpson.

Overview

Austin Venue Set for May 2015

The Corn and Soda golf tournament is venturing to yet another great golf location, Horseshoe Bay outside the state capital of Austin, Texas.  Executive committee member Dan “K Man” Kniola explained that it was a no brainer on the selection of Austin as the host city stating “When Gary “Snuffy” Shaw came to us with the idea of having it here, and for him to house six of the players, along with the superb golf climate with an average temperature between 65 and 85 deg F in May, there was little doubt for where we would be playing this year.”  Eric “E” Olson, knows he has large shoes to fill as he subs in for Pete “Sticks” Stracke as this year’s tournament logistics planner, further added, “Austin seemed like a perfect fit, being that the zip code encompassing its downtown entertainment district hosts the most bar or alcohol-serving establishments in the U.S.”

Stephen Adler, mayor of Austin (known as The Live Music Capital of the World) proclaimed, “The City of Austin along the Colorado River and its neighboring Horseshoe Bay region are pleased to host the 31st annual Corn and Soda golf championship in May.”  He expanded, “This venerable and respected tournament helps to fill the entertainment void left between our two well known music venues, the South by Southwest in March and the Austin City Limits Festival in October.  As the most populous city (11th in the US) without a club in a major-league professional sports team, we’re thrilled to host a golf tournament with the pedigree of the C&S.”  Two current Austin residents, PGA tour pros Rich Beem and Ben Crenshaw, bolstered this sentiment.  Gentle Ben reflected “After playing my final round at the Masters this year, I thought golf no longer would be a focus for me but having this tournament nearby completely changes this.”  Rich Beem said “I can’t wait to see the action and hope to meet up with my buddies from South Dakota.”
