Results

Although the Cup match was never in doubt, with Soda besting Corn by 25 points, the 40th annual C&S proved to be one of the best tournaments ever held with all the venues exceeding already high expectations with perfect golfing weather every day.  The accomodations and various dining establishments nearby were first rate and enjoyed by all.

Splitting the 2 twelve man teams into an east (Soda) vs. Florida + west (Corn) looked good on paper with handicaps within 2 strokes total but the outcome was anything but close.  Soda took a commanding lead on day one and never let up.  Led by co-GOTYs Brian "Algae" Allgaier and Pat "NP" Burns, Soda won by the largest margin of victory percentage wise ever in C&S competition.

For the first time ever, the 4-man team event was not played as a scramble so everyone could play their own ball at Spyglass Hill.  This turned out to be a good choice as the course was fantastic and humbling at times.  The team of Brian "Meat" Smith, Dave "Jack" Nicholson, and newbies Steve "Sweck" Swecker and Chris "Chef" Shaw won the Nassau portion which was scored as a low gross + 2 low net.  However, the team of newbie Ken "KD" Danker, Algae, NP, and Greg "Otis" Dairl won the Stableford with it's accompanying individual points which was scored as a low + high net.

A bright spot for Corn was newbie Chef who won the long drive contest but also took home the $2 award for hitting a house on the par 5 14th hole at Pebble.  Closest to the Pin at the 18th hole at Pasatiempo went to Algae.  The Big Duffer jacket was hotly contested between 4 Corn players with Jack taking home the dishonors.

Partnering with a Pro was won by Otis with Chris "dB" Bender and Roy "Tanman" Tanner tieing for 2nd place.  4th place was also a tie between Carl "Skets" Sacchetti and Brian "Iced Tea" Jackson.

Overview

To celebrate the 40th annual C&S event, we are breaking the bank, so to speak, as we are heading to Monterey, CA to play golf at some of California's finest courses. Demand amongst former players and new prospects to attend this years event exceeded forecasts by the executive committee resulting in an expansion from the previous maximum of 16 players to 24.  And we still have a waiting list!  Apparently money is no object (well at least when it comes to golf).

Naturally, the highly desired and acclaimed Pebble Beach golf course is the main draw for golfers all over the world as it is for us.  However, the other 3 courses are also well respected and include Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills, and Pasatiempo.  A small change to the 4-man match was proposed and accepted.  The first day of golf at Spyglass Hill will be a 4-man team match but not a scramble to allow everyone to post their own score on it.

Current Monterey Mayor Tyller Williamson was exuberant when asked how he felt about the Corn and Soda Cup matches coming to his city on the Pacific coast, saying "I could not be prouder for our city to be the host of such a venerable golf event as evidenced by this being its 40 year anniversary.  I'm sure mayor Fred Keeley of nearby Santa Cruz feels the same as I do."  Three (3) of the rounds will be played in Pebble Beach with the final day being played in the Santa Cruz area.
